How it works

Understand how the Biodigester works

Diagram showing how the Aquarela Eco Biodigester works

Wastewater enters through the inlet pipe (1) and is carried by the internal piping to the bottom of the Biodigester (2), where it is forced into an upflow (from bottom to top).

By gravity, the solid part of the wastewater separates from the liquid and a layer of active sludge forms, where anaerobic microorganisms actively decompose the organic matter. The decomposed matter settles at the conical bottom, accumulating as stabilized sludge.

The remaining liquid seeps into the internal basket (3), where it comes into contact with the filter media (plastic media). The basket works as a three-phase separator and hosts bacteria that further break down the organic matter, making the treated effluent cleaner.

The effluent is collected by the internal channel and released through the outlet pipe (4) to the proper destination (soakaway pit, infiltration trench, drainage channel, etc.).

The sludge (5) accumulates at the conical bottom and should be removed to the drying box roughly every 12 months. To remove it, simply open the valve (6) and release the sludge through the pipe (7). Then close the valve and let the sludge dry until the next removal.

What is a Biodigester?

The Biodigester is a sustainable and efficient solution for domestic wastewater treatment. It combines the functions of an upflow anaerobic reactor (UASB), an anaerobic filter and an Imhoff tank in a compact, functional system that enables domestic wastewater treatment in places not served by conventional treatment networks. In addition, the Aquarela Eco Biodigester has a sludge removal system based on hydraulic head difference, which allows simple and safe maintenance with no need for equipment, pumps, septic pumping trucks or specialized labor.

Advantages:

  • 100% watertight product, with no risk of environmental contamination.
  • Simple maintenance, with no need for daily intervention or septic pumping trucks.
  • More efficient than conventional septic tank and anaerobic filter systems.
  • Compact system: simpler installation and a smaller footprint.

Ideal for homes, businesses, farms, country properties, factories or any place without access to a sewer network or that wants to improve its current treatment.

How efficient is the Aquarela Eco Biodigester?

The Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 17076/2024 sets out the procedure for verifying the efficiency of a Compact Wastewater Treatment Unit (ECTE). This assessment involves 12 months of analysis, and the most responsible manufacturers, such as Aquarela Eco, must follow this process. Based on our field data and the literature, the Aquarela Eco Biodigester achieves a treatment capacity of more than 85% organic load reduction.

What are the installation rules for a Biodigester?

Installation must follow local regulations and the instructions in the Aquarela Eco Installation Manual. We recommend having the work done by a qualified professional to ensure the system performs efficiently.

How is the Biodigester cleaned?

Cleaning the Biodigester is simple: sludge should be removed every 12 months, which may vary according to the usage habits of each site. This cleaning should preferably be done during dry periods. See the Installation Manual for detailed maintenance instructions.

What is the role of the drying box in the Biodigester?

The drying box is essential for the safe and practical removal of the sludge treated by the Biodigester. In it, the stabilized sludge removed during the annual cleanings rests so it can drain and fully mineralize, avoiding any risk of contaminating people, pets and the environment. After the sludge is removed from the Biodigester, it should remain in the box for another year and then be taken out before the next maintenance.

What type of wastewater is the Biodigester recommended for?

Aquarela Eco Biodigesters were designed to treat domestic wastewater only, meeting efficiency and safety standards. We do not recommend using them for other types of waste. If you have any questions, contact our customer service at +55 17 3811-1580.

What is the difference between a Conventional Septic Tank and a Biodigester?

The Biodigester is a modern solution that, thanks to its different hydraulic regime, delivers highly effective treatment in a more compact product than conventional septic tank systems. Its maintenance is also simpler, since no septic pumping truck is needed to remove the sludge.
